Have you built or bought a new shed? Or, have you had one for a while that needs some sprucing up?

Then you may need some ideas on what to put on shed floors.

Every time you step into your shed, you are using the floor, but this can often be a part of the shed that can be overlooked when it comes to design and maintenance.

No one wants to spend a day gardening only to have to clean the shed floor, right? That is understandable.

Thus, if you need some ideas of ways to keep your shed floor looking great for years and finding ways to make it look like you put a ton of time and effort into making it look nice, here are some ways to transform your shed floor.

What to Put on Shed Floors

For those of you still building their shed, you can use these tips from the beginning to ensure that your foundation and wood floors look great from the start.

1. An Epoxy Coating

If your shed is made of wood, which most are, then you can keep your wood hard and free from damage with an epoxy coating.

This coating will protect the floor from cold, heat, and breakage due to a heavy tool or pot falling on the floor, plus, it will reduce the occurrence of splinters.

Epoxy coatings are paint that will help floors last longer and also gives them a shiny new finish.

They come in a large variety of colors so you can choose one that matches the outside of the shed, or you can get a darker shade that will be less noticeable.

How to Do It

To apply this coating, here are the things you need to do:

1. Prepare the Floor

You will need to make sure that everything is off the floor and not in a position where it could fall.

This coating takes a few days to dry and could be ruined if something touches the floor while it is wet.

You also want to clean the entire space so that no dirt or small particles are on the ground, as this will help the coating to dry properly without any unwanted bumps.

You will then need to open the paint can and mix the paint.

2. Apply the Coating

Epoxy coatings can be fairly slippery if they get wet, so it is best to also mix in the available additive that gives you better non-slip protection.

Then, use a roller to put the coating onto the wood.

Do note that this can’t be walked on, and since it takes a long time to dry, it needs to be put on correctly the first time.

As such, make sure that you completely cover the wood with enough paint to saturate it by starting from the furthest corner of the room and work your way to the front of the shed.

3. Leave to Fully Cure

Once the coating is applied, you will want to leave the shed doors open for it to cure for 72 hours since to allow the mixture to cure and dry so that you can walk on it.

The curing time is long, so it is best to schedule a specific weekend to do it when you can plan not to need anything from the shed.

The coating will dry and harden so you can feel the difference when you walk on it.

2. Padded Mats

Maybe your floor doesn’t need to be a major design element of your shed, and you’re looking for a way to make the hard floor more comfortable to stand on.

If so, then getting padded mats to put around the floor is a great way to do that.

In areas where you are typically standing for long periods, you can place a padded mat on the floor so that there is a cushion in that spot.

This will help keep your feet from hurting and allow you to work longer if needed.

These usually don't come in any special designs or fashionable colors but are functional.

They are also usually just black rubber mats with padding on the interior, but with concrete or dark wood floors, so they can blend in pretty well.

Another plus to these mats is that they are super easy to clean; just take a wet rag and wipe them down.

You can also sweep them with a broom with the rest of the floor on days when deep cleaning isn’t needed.

3. Diamond Plate Padding

Similar to the padded mats, Diamond Plate flooring is an option that offers rubber padding for the floor.

The difference here is that this flooring covers the entire floor.

With diamond-shaped patterning across the flooring, your shoes will have enough traction so you won’t slip.

Diamond Plate Rubber flooring is sold in large rolls, so they are easy to measure and roll out easily; hence, installing them is simple.

To install this flooring, all you will need is high-strength adhesive to ensure that it will adhere to the ground and not slide around. If you have wood flooring that you don’t want to put adhesive over, you can just glue it in each corner.

The middle may see some sign of movement, but this will likely keep it in place with normal use.

Although this choice doesn’t come in many different colors, the black color will add some depth to the shed and make the floor less of a style statement.

3. Rugs

Shed floors can often be cold and hard, which can take a toll on your body after spending some time sitting on one.

Adding rugs on the floor of the shed will make it more comfortable, inviting, and give you a bit of warmth.

This method is also a simple and easy one just like the rubber mats because you just have to lay it on the floor.

However, finding the right ones might be where the difficulty comes in because rugs come in all shapes and sizes with many different designs.

Thus, you should aim to get ones that bring color to the room.

Adding bright blue rugs with a print to a shed that has a blue and white exterior will coordinate and bring together the entire look.

Deciding on a Shape and Size

From round shapes to bear rugs with arms and legs, you can find almost anything you can think of when it comes to rugs, so look for something that will fit the space.

You can choose to have multiple small rugs only in areas you use often, or you can also have one large rug for the entire shed floor.

Either way, you want to measure the area before you go shopping to ensure that you get the size you need.

After that, you can start looking at the shape of the area and deciding what rug shape will work best there.

Most rugs that will fit in a square shed will end up being square or rectangular.

Depending on what is kept in the shed, you may find that a rounded option will work better.

It would be best if you also looked for ones made with a thicker, padded material since this will make them more comfortable to stand on.

4. Multiple Options

Do you like the idea of having an epoxy coating, but you would also want the comfort of a rubber mat or rug?

Then mixing multiple options is ideal. Also, because the epoxy could get slippery when wet, having a rug or mat over it will help keep you from sliding on the floor.

Choosing to mix multiple options will also give you the ability to have a solid floor that is resistant to cracking and get some comfort and warmth during the colder parts of the year.

If you really would like to make your shed a comfortable place to be, you should also choose to use a rug underneath the mats to have cushion and warmth.

You can also get the Diamond Plate rubber flooring to place over the epoxy coating if you want durability and comfort.

How to Decide

Where you live and the climate throughout the year will likely determine which of these options you will choose.

If you live in a colder climate, then you will probably opt for the rugs because of the warmth that they will provide when the weather is cold.

Also, if you live in warm weather with lots of sun shining into the shed, you might not want to put in rubber mats that could fade from the sun.

Knowing what is best for the climate where you live can help you narrow down your choices and be able to pick one sooner rather than later.

Conclusion

Keeping the floor of your shed looking like new can be too much to think about, so you can cover it or make it more durable so that you don’t have to worry about it again.
